The IPCC says, "There is high confidence that human-induced climate change has already increased the risk of river flooding in many regions."
The science says, "In most of the world, flood volume declines as temperatures (T) rise."
This ‘settled science’ stuff can be really hard to follow sometimes but let’s try anyway…
What the IPCC says about flooding and climate change
The IPCC AR6 report states that climate change is already affecting the frequency, intensity, and duration of floods. These changes are projected to continue in the future, with more frequent and severe flooding occurring in many parts of the world.
The report specifically states that:
There is high confidence that human-induced climate change has already increased the risk of river flooding in many regions.
There is medium confidence that human-induced climate change has increased the risk of coastal flooding in some regions.
There is low confidence that human-induced climate change has increased the risk of pluvial flooding (flooding caused by heavy rainfall) in many regions.
The report also states that the risks of flooding are projected to increase with further warming. For example, the report projects that:
The risk of river flooding is projected to increase by 20% for every 1°C of global warming.
The risk of coastal flooding is projected to increase by 10% for every 1°C of global warming.
The risk of pluvial flooding is projected to increase by 5% for every 1°C of global warming.
